Mandatory Electronic Payments for Specified Transactions – Tanzania 2026

Electronic Transactions (Mandatory Electronic Payments for Specified Transactions) Order 2026 GN NO 158C was published on 30 June 2026 and requires certain transactions in Tanzania to be paid and received through electronic payment methods instead of cash. 

These transactions are listed within the schedule provided within the Notice. 

Order came into force on 1 July 2026, with existing businesses given 6 months to comply.

Transactions covered:

Electronic payment is mandatory for:

• Public transport payments – Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), ferries, bridges, long-distance buses, online taxis, air transport, railways, and parking fees.

• Shopping and entertainment – payments at shopping malls, gyms, cinemas, fuel stations, conference and event venues, sports arenas, and major trade exhibitions (e.g., Saba Saba and Nane Nane).

• School fees – payments for pre-primary, primary, secondary schools, colleges, and universities.

• Higher education contributions – contributions payable to tertiary institutions and universities.

• Hotels and restaurants – accommodation, food, and beverage payments.

• Tourism services – payments for tourism-related services.

• Real estate transactions – rent, sale, or purchase of buildings, plots, and farms.

• Motor vehicle transactions – buying or selling motor vehicles.

• Agricultural cooperative transactions – payments through cooperative unions and AMCOS for strategic crops (such as cotton, cashew nuts, coffee, tea, sisal, and tobacco), including payments for agricultural inputs and pesticides.
