The Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations GN 256 2026 (Regulations) were published on 4 September 2026.

In short, a Foreigner entering Mainland Tanzania without a valid inbound insurance policy shall be denied entry.

Regulations require every Foreigner entering Mainland Tanzania through land border, seaport or airport to possess a valid inbound travel policy or certificate (Policy) issued by the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) or any other registered insurer in partnership with NIC approved by Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority.

  1. Definitions

Foreigner means a citizen other than of the United Republic of Tanzania, but excludes residents of the East African Community (EAC) Partner States or Southern African Development Community (SADC) Partner States.

Insured means a Foreigner arriving in Mainland Tanzania, identified in the specific conditions of the Policy, with respect to whom the premium has been paid and who is entitled, where fitting, to the rights derived from the Policy.

Inbound travel insurer means NIC, or any other registered insurer in partnership with NIC.

2. Policy Validity

Policy shall be valid for a maximum period of 92 days with effect from the date of arrival in Mainland Tanzania (including multiple entries into Mainland Tanzania).

A Foreigner who stays beyond 92 days shall apply for the new Policy (Regulation 5).

3. Premium

Non refundable premium of TZS equivalent to USD 44 shall be paid for an inbound travel insurance, however can only be refunded upon cancellation or any other specific circumstances provided in the Policy.

4. Insurance benefits – inbound travel insurance shall cover the following benefits:
(a) Emergency medical treatment.
(b) Emergency medical evacuation.
(c) Emergency repatriation.
(d) Loss of luggage during coverage period (i.e. loss, theft or permanent misplacement).
