As part of the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), the African Development Bank (AFDB) has approved a grant of USD 870,000 to the Rural Energy Agency (REA) towards financing off-grid energy projects in Tanzania.

AFDB states that there is significant market potential for off-grid electrification projects in Tanzania due to the vast size of the country and low population density which mean the extension of the national grid is an expensive process. As such the Government of Tanzania has highlighted off-grid projects as a viable way of improving rural electrification and access to electricity in the country.
